SJD MFCL Exclusive (SJD): Q&A – DJ Derezz

DJ Derezz Banner

Kevin Valdez (born April 23, 1988) better known by his stage name Derezz is an American DJ-Producer-singer-songwriter. He has worked his way from singing in his home town church “Christian Community Church” In Pembroke Pines Fl to becoming a Dj ready to take the world by storm.

Q: What inspired you to become a DJ?

A: Its simple, I love the idea of sharing great music and presenting it in a fun, creative and continues manner for people to enjoy. In 2002 was when I said to myself, I want to do what Dj Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk and Markus Shultz are doing but for God. 10 years later and its only been a year and half that I have started to pursue this dream and its been great. I hope many people will join me in this wonderful journey.

Q: Take us in to your creative process of how you designed The Gathering Light …episodes

A: I add about 10 songs on average to my music library each week so Im always finding new and fresh material to share. I also like to play and revisit classic and fun pop cultured related tracks / topics in the mix. Both mixes have old great classic songs but with some incredible twist that I’m sure the majority will recognize. Once I know what I want to use I write down the songs in order in my notes App on my iPhone and then go to work. I imagine what the blends, edits and mixes will sound like withoutht even hearing anything and 85% of time I’m spot on. It’s very rewarding and fun. Sometimes the best things happen by accident as well.

Q: Are you working on your own electronic dance music?

A: Yes and no at the same time. I am currently learning how to produce EDM and finding cool new things along the way which will lend a lot to my production. Might make some Trap beats 1st. My main focus right now is vocals since thats what my up and coming projects will mainly consist of. I will be overdubbing and remixing existing songs in news ways. Its a fun project and journey.

SJD On The Road (ARG): Hundred More Years Tour Experience

Hundred More Years Tour

A small and dimly lit stage, with a tall, brown-haired girl and three men sitting on wooden stools casually strumming away on their respective guitars; countless hands raised from the crowd, like a forest full of trees, each holding a camera or smartphone as motionlessly as physically possible. For about two hours.

These were my dull expectations for Francesca Battistelli’s “Hundred More Years Tour”- no anticipation could be more false. It was quite simply one of the most excellent and down-to-earth shows I had seen in a long time. I was blown away by not only the Fran and her crew, but also The Afters, as well as two up-and-coming artists we support at SJD: Kyle Sherman and Love And The Outcome.

Texas native Kyle Sherman was the first to perform. Although bright lights and crowd-touching weren’t included in his short set, his passionate voice and soft acoustic strums KyleSherman_live1lulled the audience into the intimate atmosphere of the event- I felt as if I had entered a world where none of my cares or worries mattered anymore. Kyle’s homely personality and relatable lyrics proved to be an appealing invite for the audience to sing along, despite many of them never hearing the artist’s music prior to that night. It was a fantastic experience.

Shortly after Sherman stepped down, the audience was introduced to pop duo Jodi King and her husband Chris- Love And The Outcome, hailing from Winnipeg, Canada. Even Love & The Outcome_live1before the young couple belted out their first tune, my eyes and ears were fixed on the both of them- Chris wielded a guitar, while his bride played keys and a drum simultaneously (one with each hand, much to the audience’s delight). Jodi had previously been a solo artist, and humorously told the story of how she and her husband met through music. The duo continued to play in an escalating vibe, as if each song was building up to the next in a mesmerizing swell, getting the audience off their chairs and into the moment.

The end of L&TO’s act felt like a musical cliffhanger- as if the audience was left on the edge of their seat. They were quickly picked up with an energetic spectacle by The Afters, who captured the audience with the catchy “Never Going Back To Okay”. The Afters_live3The atmosphere immediately shifted into an upbeat rock fest, as the stage lights flashed and panned like strobes to the melodies of “Beautiful Love” and “Light Up The Sky”. Lead singer Josh Havens often ventured out into the mass of fans, grabbing hands and towering over the crowd. Though the real treat was hearing the band introduce the people to new music from their brand-new record, Life Is Beautiful. The freeway-worthy jingle “Every Good Thing”, and the touching “Broken Hallelujah” were only a taste of the band’s recent work, showcased in an excellent performance.

After their final song, the Afters boys dismissed the crowd into the lobby for a short break and shopping-spree for band merch. Those fifteen minutes felt like five, as lyrics of Francesca Battistelli’s silky voice suddenly began to permeate the venue. Francesca_live1People immediately flocked back into their seats and to the front of the stage as several umbrellas (yes, umbrellas) graced the stage, and the acclaimed young singer caroled away to the beat of “I’m Letting Go”, “This Is The Stuff”, and Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”. The band’s setup was modified every few songs, ranging from the Fran sporting a Telecaster guitar, to the entire band breaking out into an unforgettable jazz symphony. A brief acoustic set showed her husband (the drummer) leading the band in a complete beat made with little more than a suitcase. Following a pause for a WorldVision video, Battistelli told of her own life experiences, and steered the crowd into a worshipful attitude with Jesus Culture’s “One Thing Remains”.

The night ended with a musical crescendo after “Free To Be Me” and “It’s Your Life”, followed by the band taking a bow; a fitting end to a spectacular show by the four artists.

I was honored to get to speak with Kyle and L&TO after their shows:KyleSherman

Kyle showcased his album Hear Me, a remarkable collection of thirteen acoustic rock ballads, worthy additions to any download roster. More of Kyle Sherman’s music can be heard at his website, Facebook, or Twitter pages. (http://www.kyleshermanmusic.com)

Love&TheOutcome

L&TO’s music will be sure to get listeners off their own chairs as well; listen to their self-titled EP and catch their shows here: http://www.loveandtheoutcome.com/.

The After’s new release, Life Is Beautiful was debuted on April 16 of this year. It can be heard via their website or iTunes: http://theafters.com.

The Latest (SJD): Abandon Progress – Jason Dunn

JasonDunnBanner2

Have you been keeping up with Jason Dunn since he left Hawk Nelson? Well, we have and we also helped support his project on Faith Launcher. Jason took a leap of faith leaving HN to venture out on his own. He had a slight set back in his first attempt with his band, Lights Go Down, but he refused to give up knowing that God had a plan.

In 2012, Jason teamed up with GRAMMY nominated songwriter and producer Aaron Rice, recording his debut solo album, Abandon Progress. Take a listen to one of his featured songs, “Innocent“:

Jason revealed the meaning of this song in the description on YouTube: “This song is for anyone who feels like a failure or a screw-up. This is a song about a Love greater than any other. A Love that forgets your mistakes. This is a Love worth singing about.” Abandon Progress is available May 14, 2013.

With the help and support of his fans, Jason exceeded his goal on Faith Launcher, which not only paid for his first solo album, but the surplus of $1,362.00 was donated to the Jason Dunn Diabetes Foundation (JDDF). He created this foundation to support children and young adults with diabetes. Jason quotes, “I want to be a role model, someone these young people can look up to, to bring them hope.” Featured on JDDF’s website is Jason’s song, “Hope Breaks You Down“:

SJD MFCL has also cheerfully donated to JDDF. Now, you have an opportunity to support Jason’s mission: providing positive role models, educational materials, and grant opportunities for the un- and under-insured diabetic youth of America. Please take time to pray about your part in this important outreach. All you have to do is visit www.jasondunnfoundation.com to initiate your support. We are excited for what God is doing through the devoted life of Jason Dunn.

Album Review (SJD): Finding Favour

Finding Favour banner

Finding Favour’s vocals are captivating. Each song is packed with passion and a mission to deliver God’s message across the world. “Shake The World,” talks about how we are God’s children. When we live to the rhythm of His Kingdom to come, it shows the world His great love. Now if you want a tear jerker song that really hits home, Finding Favour’s debut single, “Slip On By,” delivers. This motivational song will make you rethink the way you live out everyday.

We’ve got to take each moment one at a time. God has given us a lifetime to leave an impact on this earth. It is only through a little drop of influence, that we make a big difference. What will your legacy be?

“Love Stepped In” is a powerful song that reflects on people who have gone through some sort of struggle at some point in their life. Though they were down and under, Love (God) stepped into their life when they surrendered to Him. When a force as powerful as Love steps into your life, burdens begin to lift and the life you had before gets wiped away. This song expresses just how well God’s Love works. Jesus gives you a clean slate every time you turn and run into His loving arms. So, it doesn’t matter what you’re going through, just turn to Him and let Love step in.

Finding Favour’s first release, is a necessary addition to any musical collection. They are both lyrically motivating and spiritually up-lifting. Their debut album is a six track hit, completed with the addition of the songs, Hero, Hallelujah We Shall Rise, and I Am. SJD’s Music For Christian Living gives their self titled album 5 out of 5 stars. #MustOwn

SJD MFCL On The Road (PSB): David Crowder – The iTunes Session Live From NYC

dcrowdersjd

Is David Crowder gone? Well, apparently not. I can attest that he is alive and well. He recently performed at the Highlands Ballroom in N.Y.C. I was in attendance and the place was sold out.

Out with the electric guitars, keyboards and large stacks of amplifiers … In with a cello, violin, pedal steel, mandolin, and two drummers. One, of which, was playing a kit that looked like it might have fallen off the back of Hank Williams pickup truck and the other playing, according to Mr. Crowder, “Some stuff he found out back”. Add to that: several acoustic guitars and an upright bass (sometimes even bowed) and the result? … GLORIOUS!

It was wonderful. They managed to create a relaxed atmosphere that made everyone feel right at home, just like family. I had the feeling that we were finally hearing the songs the way that David Crowder wanted us to hear them. He was in his element and thankfully he shared it with us. It was a fantastic show packed with timeless classic songs and even a few surprise new great tunes.

The iTunes Sessions captures some of the essence of this concert, utilizing most of the players on the album. However, the new (did I mention great?) songs are not on it. Yet still, it is a must have album and if you can, by all means, catch the tour! … I am thinking of moving to Texas.

SJD MFCL On The Road (DJC): Burning Lights Tour Experience

burning lightsOn Thursday, February 21, 2013, I attended the most worshipful, fun, and exhilarating concert of my life: Chris Tomlin’s Burning Lights. It took place in the theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Special Guests were Kari Jobe and Louie Giglio.

About four months prior to the concert, I purchased tickets through a presale event and my seats were to be within the first few rows in front of the stage. These seats were reserved with a first come – first serve provision. When I received my tickets in the mail, they came with a welcome surprise. They had assigned seats in the third row!

When we arrived at the Garden for the concert, I showed my ticket to the security guy and he said that it was first come-first serve seating. At this time, most of the good seats were taken within the first 10-15 rows. We were advised to go check more toward the right side of the stage, which is where we found some better seats. We were about to sit down in the 7th row when, to our surprise, we spotted four seats in the front row that were available. Chris TomlinSo, we quickly navigated through the crowd and sat right in the front row! What’s so amazing about this is that there were people who got to the venue early to get the best seats and we got there five minutes before the concert started and those seats were available! God surely does work all things together for the good of those who love and trust in Him!

Sitting in the front row in one of the most storied arenas in the world and worshipping with one of the most famous Christian artists of all-time, was truly amazing! Kari Jobe opened the night with intimate worship with the songs: “You Are for Me”, “Love Came Down”, and “Holy Spirit”. Chris Tomlin followed with his band and performed songs from his newest album “Burning Lights”: “Awake My Soul”, “Crown Him”, and “God’s Great Dance Floor”. Of course, the band also delivered some their classic songs: “Our God”, “How Great is Our God”, and Holy is the Lord”.

After Chris Tomlin performed awhile, his pastor from Passion City Church, Louie Giglio, came on and preached a sermon that emphasized just how much God is so in love with us. In fact, He is crazy in love with us! Kari JobeWhen life begins to fail us, God is always for us. There was a moment when Louie Giglio pointed me out in the crowd and started talking to me. He was speaking to me personally about intimate worship referring to when, in the middle of one of Chris Tomlin songs, I was lost in worship and was actually facing the wrong way. Everyone was facing the stage but I wasn’t. It was pretty funny … something that doesn’t happen very often.

If you are familiar with Chris Tomlin and you attended this concert, you might have thought that you showed up to the wrong venue. There was a DJ, some beach balls, and they played a rap song, featuring Christian Rap artist Lecrae. Right before the concert ended, the band played “God’s Great Dance Floor” for a second time. When they did, they brought out tons of beach balls and started kicking and throwing them into the crowd. The place went crazy! It was a truly memorable event. I felt like I was on God’s Great Dance Floor all night long worshipping Him, as He most surely deserves.

The Latest (SJD): Made – Hawk Nelson

HN Cover

Hawk Nelson is back! After frontman, Jason Dunn, left the stage March 11, 2012, Hawk Nelson fans were left wondering if that would lead to the end of an era. In search of a new lead singer, Hawk Nelson didn’t have to go far. Guitarist, Jonathan Steingard, of 8 years, steps up, assuming the role of both lead vocalist and guitarist, beginning his 9th year in the band. HN started a Kickstarter in August 10, 2012. Not giving up on their vision, fans helped the band exceed their goal. Later in December, they signed with Fair Trade Services.

Hawk Nelson has become the band I anticipated they would be since 2009′s album, Live Life Loud. Slowly but surely the band was lyrically improving. Their previous album, Crazy Love, released in 2011, had an even bigger jump in their lyrics. With Jason leaving the band, I held on to a hope that HN would keep going in the direction I saw them going towards. When they released their single, “Words” I began to get excited.

Wanting more, they later announced that anyone who pre-orders their new album, Made would get to have an exclusive listening to the entire album. Listening to their new album, Made, I felt joy rising inside of me. Hawk Nelson has become the band I expected them to become. Made, is lyrically, the best album they have produced. With a new label and lead singer, Jonathan, the band’s dreams continue with a stronger vision than ever before. Looking to leave an impact on the world, HN, through their lyrics and personal lives, continue to illustrate that they are putting their faith in God. Leading by example, HN, shows us, that while growing up, we can still have fun. Hawk Nelson’s Made is a #MustOwn.
